I had the good fortune to be raised in a home that was filled with music. My mother Nancy grew up singing with her sisters and she ensured that I grew up singing with mine (and my brother), too. Mom played several instruments, including a 5-string banjo, and spent a few of her college summers performing on a historic Ohio River showboat that served as a floating musical theater for several midwestern universities.
Consequently, I was likely hearing music from Broadway shows while still in the womb. My mother also loved contemporary pop music, so if there wasn’t a record spinning on the stereo, the radio was on in the kitchen and tuned to a local station that was playing the latest hits. When we lived in Detroit (where the aforementioned brother was born), that included the Motown Sound.
Mom was my earliest musical influence, and she’s the main reason why I appreciate so many kinds of musical styles and genres today. January 4th would have been her 87th birthday, and the wonderful programming staff at 90s Plus Radio is allowing me a “point of personal privilege” so to speak, to play some of Nancy’s favorite music on this week’s TVDO show.
I’ll be sharing some classic Broadway and film soundtrack hits from the early 60s, some country & western gems from the early 70s, and multiple pop smashes from across three decades. And if you enjoy listening even half as much as I enjoyed putting this playlist together, then you’re in for a real treat. Tune in Saturday at 4pm Eastern, 1 pm Pacific for “Music My Mom Loved” … because you might just love it, too.
